What the Good Days Are For

Declan Ashworth

Hope · Identity

On the good days I stockpile normalcy like a squirrel before frost —I carry my own groceries up the fourteen steps,I answer "fine" and mean it, mostly,I let myself forget, for whole stretches, what my body is actually doing.

I used to think the bad days were the real meand the good days were a kind of performance.I don't think that anymore. The good days are real too. They're just not reliable.I've learned to love something that isn't reliable.I had a lot of practice, growing up Catholic.
