The Ones Who Still Show Up

Nobody teaches you which ones will stayonce the funeral programs stop arriving, once the casseroles are gone and the housegoes quiet in the particular waya house goes quiet when the visiting's done.I used to think that friendship was the talking, the calling just to talk, the long catch-up.I know now it's the one who drives four hoursand doesn't ask what you need, just startson the dishes stacked up since Tuesday, elbow-deep,not looking at you, talking about the drive, the weather, anything, while the actual thinggets handled without either of you naming it.Who stays isn't the one who asks how you're holding up.It's the one already holding the sponge.

About blank verseUnrhymed lines in iambic pentameter, steady in rhythm but free of rhyme.

Blank verse has no rhyme, but it keeps a beat: usually ten syllables a line, falling into five pairs, each pair a light stress then a heavier one. Because nothing chimes at the line ends, it can sound close to natural speech.

The shape Unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter: five pairs of syllables, each unstressed then stressed.

Listen for A steady da-DUM pulse, five beats a line, and no rhymes at the ends.

Listen, the sponge did a lot of emotional labor in that poem, I'm glad someone noticed. Also hi, didn't expect to make you cry over dishware but I'll take it.

Elbow-deep and not looking at you is exactly the kind of company that actually works when everything's falling apart. How do you just know that.

Honestly? No idea. Just knew nobody wants advice when things are bad, they want someone else in the room. Didn't think that'd land this hard on a tiny poem about dishes though.
