The Chip Shaped Like Ohio

I noticed it in March, scraping toast crumbs off the counter, the chip shaped like Ohio.

Four dollars buys a new one.I have four dollars.I buy the eggs instead.

My lip finds the smooth sidewithout being told to.That's not loyalty. That's just geography.

About free versePoetry without a set rhyme scheme or regular meter, shaped by the poet.

Free verse has no fixed rhyme scheme or regular meter, so there is no rule to check it against. That does not mean it lacks craft. The poet chooses where lines break, how long they run, and what repeats, and those choices shape it.

Listen for Where each line ends, and how that break changes the way you hear it.

How does a mouth learn geography without anyone teaching it? Yours finds the smooth side of that mug without being told, mapping Ohio before you ever said the word out loud. Four dollars going to eggs instead of a new one says it plainly: that's not loyalty, that's just geography.
